10 Times Armed Citizens Stopped Mass Killers

When discussions about firearms dominate the news, one reality often receives far less attention: ordinary citizens have, on numerous documented occasions, used legally possessed firearms to stop mass shooters before even more innocent lives were lost.

No one wants to live in a world where these situations occur. But history shows that evil does not always wait for law enforcement to arrive. Sometimes the first person capable of stopping a murderer is already on the scene.

Here are ten well-documented cases where armed citizens helped end or limit mass attacks.

1. New Life Church (Colorado Springs, 2007)

After killing two people at a missionary training center earlier that day, a heavily armed gunman arrived at New Life Church with hundreds of worshippers inside.

Volunteer church security member Jeanne Assam confronted the shooter with her personally owned handgun, striking him multiple times. The attacker took his own life before entering the main sanctuary, where thousands of people were gathered.

Authorities credited Assam’s actions with preventing a far greater tragedy.

2. Clackamas Town Center (Oregon, 2012)

A rifle-armed attacker opened fire inside a crowded shopping mall, killing two people.

As the shooting continued, legally armed citizen Nick Meli drew his concealed handgun and aimed at the gunman. Although he chose not to fire because innocent people were behind the attacker, witnesses and investigators said the shooter noticed the armed citizen, retreated, and then took his own life moments later.

Sometimes simply confronting evil changes its course.

3. Greenwood Park Mall (Indiana, 2022)

One of the clearest examples occurred in Greenwood, Indiana.

A gunman armed with a rifle began firing inside the food court.

Twenty-two-year-old Elisjsha Dicken, who was lawfully carrying a concealed handgun, engaged the attacker from roughly 40 yards away and stopped the attack within seconds.

Police publicly praised Dicken’s actions, with Greenwood Police Chief James Ison stating that many more lives would likely have been lost had he not intervened.

4. White Settlement Church (Texas, 2019)

During a Sunday service, an armed attacker opened fire, killing two worshippers.

Jack Wilson, head of the church’s volunteer security team, responded immediately with a single, accurate shot that ended the attack in approximately six seconds.

The incident became one of the most widely viewed examples of trained civilian defenders protecting their communities.

5. Pearl High School (Mississippi, 1997)

After killing his mother, a student began shooting classmates at school.

Assistant Principal Joel Myrick retrieved a handgun from his vehicle and confronted the attacker, holding him at gunpoint until police arrived.

His intervention helped prevent additional casualties.

6. Appalachian School of Law (Virginia, 2002)

A former student opened fire, killing three people.

Two students retrieved firearms from their vehicles and confronted the shooter. The attacker surrendered before law enforcement arrived.

Investigators concluded their actions helped bring the attack to an end.

7. First Baptist Church (Sutherland Springs, Texas, 2017)

A gunman murdered 26 people inside the church.

Neighbor Stephen Willeford grabbed his AR-15 after hearing gunfire and exchanged shots with the attacker, wounding him and forcing him to flee.

Another civilian joined Willeford in pursuing the gunman until the attacker crashed his vehicle and died.

Law enforcement credited Willeford with ending the attack and preventing further bloodshed.

8. Tacoma Mall (Washington, 2005)

A gunman fired multiple rounds inside a crowded shopping mall.

Armed civilian David George confronted the attacker at gunpoint, preventing him from harming additional victims until police arrived.

Investigators said the confrontation helped contain the situation.

9. Edinboro, Pennsylvania Dance Hall (1998)

An armed man opened fire during a school dance, killing a teacher.

Local restaurant owner James Strand, who was nearby, retrieved his handgun and confronted the shooter, holding him until authorities arrived.

His quick response prevented the attacker from escaping or harming additional victims.

10. Antioch Church of Christ (Tennessee, 2017)

After opening fire outside and inside the church, the attacker encountered church member Robert Engle, who retrieved a firearm from his vehicle.

Engle confronted and wounded the gunman, helping end the attack before police arrived.

Authorities credited his actions with stopping further loss of life.

The Common Thread

These stories are not arguments that every armed citizen is a hero or that every dangerous situation requires civilian intervention.

They do demonstrate one important fact: lawfully armed citizens have, in documented cases, stopped or limited mass shootings.

Police officers consistently perform extraordinary work, but they cannot be everywhere at once. In many attacks, the first few minutes determine how many lives are lost. Those first moments often belong to the people already present.

Whether someone supports expansive gun rights or stricter firearm regulations, the historical record includes numerous examples where responsible, legally armed civilians acted courageously under unimaginable pressure.

Those individuals did not wake up expecting to become heroes.

They simply found themselves standing between innocent people and someone determined to kill.
