Pro-Gun Candidates Win Big in U.S. Elections, Energizing Second Amendment Advocates

In a notable victory for Second Amendment supporters, the 2024 U.S. elections saw pro-gun candidates secure numerous significant wins across various levels of government. The return of Donald Trump to the presidency, along with the election of a pro-gun majority in the Senate, has given gun rights advocates momentum as they prepare to advance new legislative goals.

Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), two prominent pro-gun groups, credited gun owners nationwide for these successes. GOA Senior Vice President Erich Pratt expressed optimism, stating that President Trump’s return will help to “repeal the Biden-Harris infringements” and advance a “brighter course” for Second Amendment rights.

With a Senate majority, pro-gun advocates now have increased support for policy goals such as national concealed carry reciprocity, dismantling restrictive ATF policies, and potentially defunding “red flag” laws, which allow for temporary firearm confiscation under certain conditions. Additionally, the Senate’s pro-gun stance could influence the appointment of federal judges who support a strict interpretation of Second Amendment rights

Further down the ballot, races in states like Texas and Montana reinforced the pro-gun momentum. In Texas, Senator Ted Cruz, known for his strong support of gun rights, won re-election, while anti-gun lobbyist Ryan Busse was defeated in his bid for governor in Montana. The results were lauded by gun rights groups as a clear mandate from voters who prioritize Second Amendment protections

This political landscape sets the stage for what gun advocates hope will be significant policy shifts at the federal level. Both GOA and CCRKBA have announced plans to hold newly elected officials accountable to their campaign promises on gun rights, viewing this as a rare opportunity to expand Second Amendment protections nationwide.
