Kamala Harris Claims to Own a Glock, But Supported Handgun Bans for YOU!

In recent weeks, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has made headlines for comments related to her ownership of a firearm. In several interviews, including a mid-September conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Harris stated that she owns a gun for self-defense and even mentioned how she would use it to protect her home from an intruder. During a subsequent interview on 60 Minutes, Harris specified that her firearm of choice is a Glock semiautomatic handgun.

This revelation has raised questions due to Harris’s long-standing support for policies that restrict gun ownership, including some that would limit access to the very type of firearm she claims to possess.

In 2005, while serving as San Francisco’s district attorney, Harris supported Proposition H, a ballot measure aimed at banning the possession of all handguns within the city limits. This initiative was approved by voters but was ultimately struck down in court following a legal challenge by the National Rifle Association (NRA). The measure sought not only to prevent future handgun sales but also to confiscate handguns already owned by residents.

Furthermore, in 2008, Harris, again as district attorney, supported Washington, D.C.’s handgun ban by signing an amicus brief in the landmark Supreme Court case District of Columbia v. Heller. The Court’s ruling ultimately overturned the D.C. ban, affirming the individual right to possess firearms for self-defense under the Second Amendment.

Harris’s actions in California also reflect her stance on gun control. As Attorney General, she enforced and expanded the state’s “Roster of Certified Handguns,” which imposes specific requirements on firearms sold within the state. New semiautomatic handguns must meet strict standards, including microstamping technology, which many manufacturers argue is unworkable in practice. As a result, numerous modern handgun models have been effectively banned from sale in California, restricting access for law-abiding citizens while limiting market options.

These positions, combined with her leadership role in the Biden administration’s White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, have fueled criticism from gun rights advocates. In September 2023, the House Oversight and Accountability Committee began investigating allegations of potential collusion between the administration and anti-gun advocacy groups. The investigation centers around claims that the administration pressured gun manufacturers, including Glock, to alter their designs in connection with lawsuits filed by cities such as Chicago.

The contrast between Harris’s personal ownership of a firearm and her political record has prompted ongoing debate about her views on gun rights. Critics argue that her policies disproportionately restrict law-abiding citizens while maintaining her own right to self-defense, a contradiction that continues to draw attention in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
