A Texas homeowner is being credited with stopping a violent home invasion after confronting three armed intruders and driving them off in a late-night shootout. According to local authorities, the homeowner’s quick response and lawful use of force almost certainly prevented a deadly attack.
Police in Harris County say the incident unfolded just after 11 p.m. when three masked suspects forced their way into a family home. The homeowner, who was awake at the time, armed himself and confronted the intruders as they entered the hallway leading toward the bedrooms where other family members were sleeping.
Investigators say the suspects were armed and attempted to rush the homeowner, prompting him to open fire. At least two of the intruders returned fire before fleeing the scene. No members of the household were injured.
Sheriff’s deputies later recovered shell casings, forced-entry damage, and surveillance footage confirming the intruders’ attempted assault. Detectives believe the suspects had targeted the home intentionally and were prepared to commit a violent crime.
“The homeowner’s actions were lawful and likely saved his family’s lives,” one Harris County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson said. “This was a clear case of a citizen defending his home against an armed threat.”
Authorities are still searching for the intruders, who escaped in a dark-colored vehicle seen speeding away from the neighborhood. Investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance cameras and asking residents for any additional footage.
The incident is the latest in a series of defensive gun uses reported across Texas this year, many of which have involved homeowners confronting armed assailants. Under Texas law, residents have broad legal protections when defending themselves or their families from violent intruders inside their homes.
Neighbors expressed shock at the attack but voiced support for the homeowner, noting that the area has recently experienced an uptick in attempted burglaries.
“I’m just glad they’re safe,” one neighbor told local reporters. “Anyone would do the same for their family.”
Police encourage anyone with information related to the suspects to contact the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
