California Loves Gun Control, Loathes Crime Control

California keeps piling new restrictions onto its already massive stack of gun control laws, all aimed at disarming law-abiding citizens. Despite leading the nation in infringements, lawmakers this year pushed four more gun control bills onto Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk—including one that bans one of the most common handguns in America. Not content with stripping rights inside his own state, Newsom is even pushing a so-called 28th Amendment designed to gut the Second Amendment itself.

The political class likes to claim these measures are about “crime,” but ordinary gun owners know better: these laws target them, not criminals. In fact, it has taken direct pressure from California voters just to restore a shred of sanity to the state’s collapsing justice system. A recent shooting in Sacramento underscores the hypocrisy.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, on September 19 a man in his 60s allegedly opened fire on the occupied offices of KXTV/ABC 10 in downtown Sacramento. The attack came only two days after late-night host Jimmy Kimmel was suspended for inflammatory remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. CBS News reported that investigators are exploring whether the gunman’s motive was connected to that suspension.

National Review confirmed the Sacramento district attorney believes the shooter was politically motivated. DOJ officials said they found political messages in his home, including a weekly planner on the refrigerator that read, under “Friday”: “Do the Next Scary Thing.” In his car, officers discovered another note: “For hiding Epstein & ignoring red flags. Do not support Patel, Bongino, & AG Pam Bondi. They’re next. – C.K. from above.” Prosecutors believe “C.K.” refers to Charlie Kirk.

The suspect was arrested Friday on multiple felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon and firing into an occupied building. But instead of holding him, local authorities released him on bail the very next day. Only federal law enforcement stepped in to re-arrest him Saturday, bringing charges that made him ineligible for release.

That’s the real story: California politicians aren’t interested in keeping dangerous criminals off the streets. Their priority is to bury law-abiding citizens under endless new gun laws while letting violent offenders walk free. For all their sanctimonious posturing, their revealed preference is clear—they care more about controlling you than stopping actual crime.
