Our friends at the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) recently highlighted something that would be funny if it weren’t so absurd: Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety is now claiming it wants to “teach” gun owners how to handle firearms safely.
Let that irony sink in.
Bloomberg’s Anti-Gun Machine
Everytown isn’t just another nonprofit. It’s the crown jewel of Bloomberg’s multi-billion-dollar crusade against the Second Amendment. He built it by merging Moms Demand Action with Mayors Against Illegal Guns back in 2014, and then expanded it to include The Trace, his propaganda outlet posing as a media organization.
For years, Bloomberg’s network has:
-
Pushed bans on popular firearms and ammunition.
-
Worked to shut down gun stores and ranges.
-
Supported credit-card tracking of lawful firearm purchases.
-
Backed meritless lawsuits aimed at bankrupting manufacturers.
-
Misrepresented lawful defensive gun uses as “gun violence.”
Now, the same man who spent half a billion dollars on a failed presidential run wants gun owners to believe he cares about their safety.
Gun Safety… or Bloomberg Rebranding?
The idea of Bloomberg’s Everytown teaching firearms owners about safety is as ludicrous as Bloomberg himself teaching a course on how to win the presidency. Their track record shows disdain, not respect, for gun ownership.
A “safety” course run by Bloomberg’s group would likely:
-
Start with an argument that you shouldn’t own a gun at all.
-
Present nearly every defensive use-of-force scenario as unjustified.
-
Preach “safe storage” as keeping your firearm unloaded, disassembled, and locked away—rendering it useless for self-defense.
-
Avoid any serious mention of concealed carry, something Bloomberg and Everytown have fought to restrict at every turn.
This isn’t safety. It’s rebranding. By hijacking the language of “gun safety,” Bloomberg hopes to make gun control sound reasonable to moderates and new gun owners.
NRA: 150 Years of Real Firearms Training
By contrast, the NRA has been training Americans for over 150 years. With 125,000 certified instructors, NRA courses cover everything from beginner basics to advanced defensive shooting.
The difference? NRA instructors don’t tell you that you shouldn’t own certain legal firearms—or that your rights should be curtailed. They teach real-world safety and responsibility.
Plenty of other legitimate firearms training programs exist too, which makes Bloomberg’s sudden foray into “safety” all the more suspicious.
The Real Bloomberg Strategy
So why is Everytown doing this? Because Bloomberg understands that “gun control” polls poorly. Americans instinctively resist the idea of their rights being restricted. But “gun safety” sounds neutral, responsible, even family-friendly.
This is classic Bloomberg: change the words, soften the message, and smuggle in the same old restrictions under a friendlier label.
And once you sign up for a Bloomberg-sponsored course, what’s to stop them from collecting your personal data? That information could later be weaponized for political campaigns or fundraising.
Caveat Emptor
Gun owners already have plenty of trusted training options led by instructors who actually respect the Second Amendment. Bloomberg’s sudden interest in “safety” is not about education—it’s about politics, image, and control.
If you ever see an Everytown gun safety course advertised, remember who’s really behind it: Michael Bloomberg. Buyer beware.
